Madibaland World Literary Festival: Landa Mabenge

Landa Mabenge is the author of Becoming Him-a trans memoir of triumph. He holds a BCom P.P.E degree from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and a BA Hons from the University of the Western Cape (UWC); where he also guest lectures 2nd year gender studies students. He is an MA candidate in Gender Studies at the University of Sussex (UK), which is funded through by prestigious Chevening Scholarship programme. Landa is a transgender educationalist through his independent consultancy, Landa Mabenge Consulting. He is the first known transgender man in South Africa to successfully motivate a medical aid for the payment of his gender alignment surgeries and has extensive experience working in the private and public health care sectors in South Africa. Landa also works with the Stellenbosch University Equality Unit, where he is a community partner for their Programme for International Students. He also works with other institutions of higher learning as guest speaker and facilitator, specifically for their equality and transformation units. He is an alumnus of the Mandela Washington Fellowship (MWF), the flagship programme of President Barack Obamas Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) and currently serves as non-executive director on the South African MWF Alumni Council. Landa is passionate about community youth engagement and is serving on the USAID’s youth advisory board and is a 2019 Human Rights Campaign Global Fellow. He also serves on various boards within the human rights space and is currently serving on the University of Cape Town (UCT) Electoral College, and was part of the delegation that appointed the current Chancellor, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe.
Landa believes in the fundamentals of compassion and humanity and is committed to being of impactful service through conversations that inspire a return to being human first.
