Ria Winters is a Dutch historian and artist with a BA degree in the culture of the Dutch Golden Age. She works at the Allard Pierson Museum and Institute of the University of Amsterdam. Her most recent subjects involve the history of South African society and literature, for which she is developing a deeper understanding by following a Master course at the African Studies Center of Leiden University. Her most recent publication, Reise met Schoeman. In die voetspore van die skrywer (Protea Boekhuis, 2020), is an account of her correspondence with historian and novellist Karel Schoeman (1939-2017). In this book she follows Schoeman on his travels through Ireland, Scotland, South Africa and Amsterdam. Ria is also an author on LitNet where she published two essays about the work of Schoeman, one dealing with a newly discovered article in Irish by him and another about the use of colour in his writings.
